While vehicle electrification may provide a promising long-term solution, the costs of wide-scale deployment are high and it will take decades to transition. In 2050, it is estimated that the global vehicle fleet will still rely primarily on the internal combustion engine as its prime mover. To significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the global reliance on petroleum now, there is an urgent need for cleaner, more efficient engines.
